Kids Stormwater Sleuth Activity

Move out of the way April Showers, May showers are en vogue now!

All this rain can make it difficult to get outside with your family on a regular basis. Here’s a fun activity to get your kids outside and help them feel empowered in making stormwater management decisions around your home. Put on your rain coats and galoshes and let’s get started!

Activity

  1. Print out the University of Nebraska’s stormwater walk reference sheet.
  2. Take the reference sheet with you and walk around the house with your children. Record things that affect stormwater runoff. For example, gutters, downspouts, and rain barrels.
  3. Tally up your count for each category on the sheet. Give your house a score.
  4. Discuss ways you can make improvements based on your different scores.
